Small business owner Shirah, 65, must hope that six is his lucky number. He’s previously sought election to city commission five times, most recently losing to now-Commissioner Stephanie Madden in 2017. Shirah received 1,673 votes, or about 12 percent of the total ballots cast. His last bid for public office was against Josie Tomkow, a Polk City Republican, for the 39th District Florida House seat twice last year, losing both in a May special election and again in November.
